Cooking from everywhere is now the default

A single week of home cooking in the United States might run through Mexican, Italian, Thai, Indian and Levantine food. The kitchen that reflects that cannot be themed around a single country — it needs a system that lets several cultures sit together without turning into noise.

The rule of three

Three countries is the sweet spot: heritage, home and the cuisine you cook most. Hung in identical frames with equal spacing, three different cultures read as one deliberate collection rather than three separate souvenirs.

Keep one variable constant

Either keep the frame identical and vary the country, or keep the poster edition identical — all white, or all black — and vary everything else. One constant is enough to hold a mixed wall together.

Rotating with the seasons

Tea towels and aprons are the cheapest way to move a kitchen through cultures — swap them seasonally while the posters stay. Many households rotate textiles around the holidays of the cuisines they cook.
