A country that eats outside more often than in — with the smell of eucalyptus in the air, a cricket match on somewhere in the background, and a table piled with prawns, pavlova and cold rieslings.
Chapter One
Brunch, barbies and bright plates
Australia has quietly become one of the most exciting food countries in the world. Melbourne's café culture perfected the flat white and reinvented brunch. Sydney's markets brim with kingfish, mangoes and Vietnamese herbs. Every neighbourhood is a small United Nations — dumpling shops, kebab houses, Ethiopian cafés and old-school bakeries all on the same block.
Underneath the modern layer sits the older ritual: the weekend barbecue. Snags on the grill, prawns tossed with lemon, a bowl of pavlova wobbling on the picnic table, and a long afternoon that stretches easily into evening.
In Australia, the barbecue is not a meal so much as a way of spending the afternoon.
