Vol. 08 — Kaffeehaus Afternoons
Austria
From Vienna to the Alps
Standfirst
A country that treats a slice of cake and a small marble table as a form of civic architecture. Austria cooks patiently — schnitzel golden, strudel paper-thin, coffee served on a silver tray with a glass of water on the side.
Chapter One
Coffee as an institution
The Viennese kaffeehaus is not a café — it is a room in which time behaves differently. A small melange arrives on a silver tray with a glass of water. Newspapers hang on wooden holders. Waiters in bow ties glide past unbothered. You can sit for four hours over one coffee and no one will make you feel unwelcome.
Around that ritual, an entire pastry tradition flourishes: Sacher torte with its glossy chocolate crown, apple strudel wrapped in tissue-thin dough, and topfenstrudel warm from the oven with a slick of vanilla sauce.
A Viennese coffee is served with a glass of water and enough time to read the whole newspaper. That is the deal.

Chapter Two
From the gasthaus to the alp
Schnitzel pounded thin and fried golden. Kaiserschmarrn shredded and dusted with sugar. Käsespätzle bubbling under a crust of onions in an alpine hut. The Austria collection carries that warm, mountain-and-marble spirit into small everyday objects.
